Justice Issues

In addition to serving our wider community and providing hands on mission opportunities, our Social Action Committee also looks to engage the congregation in discussion and advocacy work around various social justice issues. For example:

Racial Justice and Incarceration - A two night discussion on racial justice and mass incarceration using the book "The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness" resulted in a new awareness of an issue that deeply affects God's children. We hope to continue our advocacy in this area in the months to come.

Interfaith Action for Human Rights - a Mid-Altantic faith based coalition that believes in a multi-faith, multi-racial, and multi-ethnic society based on human rights and respect for human dignity.

Gun Violence and the March for Our Lives - Several members and friends of UCCSV, including several of our youth, participated in the Washington DC protest march in March 2018 to speak out against gun violence and to promote common sense gun laws.

Issues Around Gender and Sexuality - UCCSV members and friends were very active in the fight for Marriage Equality in Maryland, lobbying our local senators and representatives. We also hosted the Montgomary County Interfaith Transgender Day of Remembrance in November of 2017 and regularly support the work of the PFLAG support group that meets in our building once a month. In June of 2018 we watched Katie Couric's documentary entitled "Gender Revolution" sparking a lively discussion on gender norms, and issues around gender identity and expression.
