Our Vision for Music Ministry

The Music Ministry of the United Church of Christ of Seneca Valley (UCCSV) exists to enrich the spiritual journeys of all people with the joy and inspiration of music. The music ministry is an instrument to teach, comfort, inspire and evangelize.

The vision of the UCCSV Music Ministry…

  • a faith-based ministry that offers a means for worshipers to experience God’s love through music.
  • a blend of voices, instruments and dance to lead and inspire worship in Sunday services and the inclusion of music in other programs and activities of the church.
  • a diverse and inclusive variety of music styles and opportunities for children, youth and adults that encourage them to experience and/or participate in the music ministry with their time and talents.

Position Description

Title
Director of Music Ministry – Part-Time

Overview
The Director of Music Ministry is called to provide leadership in creating a dynamic, creative music ministry in all aspects of worship and the community life of UCCSV. The position will require about 20 hours per week and it is expected that the director will be in the church building at times beyond rehearsals and Sunday worship service for meetings, preparation and planning. Job-sharing (i.e., separating accompanist and director duties) is an option with this position.

Ministry Responsibilities

  1. Provides leadership to support the Vision for Music Ministry and for the faith journey of all members and worshipers of UCCSV.
  2. Directs, accompanies, supervises, plans, and/or provides all musical elements of worship and special services, including but not limited to Chancel and Children’s Choirs. The Chancel and Children’s Choirs are made up of volunteers with a wide range of musical experience.
  3. Conducts regular and supplemental (as necessary) rehearsals for both Chancel and Children’s Choirs.
  4. Provides appropriate musical elements for all activities within the music ministry, including selection of repertoire in consultation with the Pastor.
  5. Enhances the expression of faith by incorporating a broad musical spectrum, from diverse time periods, genres, and cultures.
  6. Encourages and fosters the musical talents of all members and worshipers of UCCSV.
  7. Serves as primary accompanist as musical needs of the church dictate.
  8. Supports musical expression with other faith communities, such as intra- and interfaith services.
  9. Maintains collegial and productive working relationships with the Pastor and groups assigned to plan and participate in worship and special services.

Administrative Responsibilities

  1. Coordinates the use and proper maintenance of UCCSV’s musical instruments, including a Rodgers electronic 2 manual organ with full pedal board and a Yamaha C Series 7 foot grand piano.
  2. Oversees the maintenance and organization of the UCCSV Music Library.
  3. Arranges for a substitute or guest music director, as necessary.
  4. Develops, manages, and operates within a yearly budget for UCCSV’s music ministry in consultation with the Pastor and the Board of Deacons.
  5. Is administratively responsible to the Pastor, works with the worship team, and receives program direction from the Board of Deacons.

Qualifications

  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in choral direction and/or accompaniment.
  • Piano solo/accompanist skills required (organ experience preferred).
  • Experienced with children and adult choirs.
  • A minimum of a BA preferred.
  • Experience with diverse repertoires from various musical periods and cultures.
  • Ability to enhance the faith experience through music.
