Social Action
Member Engagement: ALL Members

GERMANTOWN HELP

UCCSV collects food and sanitary items all year to support families in crisis. At Christmas and Thanksgiving, the county provides UCCSV with names of families that need assistance. On both holidays, UCCSV members deliver care baskets overflowing with holiday food, and with grocery gift cards to purchase perishables. At Christmas, additional age- and gender-appropriate clothing and toys are included with the care baskets for children, as well as for adults with disabilities. Filling and delivering these holiday baskets are long standing traditions in UCCSV.

Montgomery County Women’s Shelter

Every year, UCCSV members prepare, deliver and serve three meals for each of four days, including specific meals (e.g. vegetarian, diabetic meals) to 30-35 homeless women at a local shelter in Rockville, Maryland that provides job training, medical assistance, shelter, and protection to these vulnerable women. UCCSV volunteers cook these meals at home, then deliver, serve, and dine with these women. Last year, other UCCSV volunteers packed up to 35 hearty bag lunches and brought breakfast supplies (e.g. cereals, bread, milk, juices) to the shelter.

Emergency Assistance

is an ongoing ministry sustained entirely by donations from members and friends of the church.  It began in the early 1990's under the auspices of the late Harriet Hintz, a member of the church.  Harriet's initial idea was to collect small change and use it to help local residents with food, utilities and other live sustaining basics.

Equal Exchange Fairly Traded Coffee and Chocolate

As part of the UCC coffee project, UCCSV supports this global Fair Trade project to help improve economic conditions of farmers and farming communities. Once a month, Fair Trade coffee and chocolate are sold during coffee hour, after worship service. All the profit earned from this project goes to Emergency Assistance.

SHAW COMMUNITY MINISTRY

In 1991, the Potomac Association of the UCC helped establish the Shaw Community Ministry to serve residents of the low income/ high unemployment/ high crime Shaw neighborhood of Washington DC. The ministry provides after-school and summer camp programs for children from 5-12 years of age, and other services for young adults and families.

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY

For many years, UCCSV members have helped build houses in West Virginia for 5 days in the summer. Lately, we have partnered with a Rockville Church in raising funds to support this program every year. UCCSV members support the fund raising activities by attending the annual dinner, purchasing Christmas wreaths, and contributing to the annual yard sale. UCCSV usually has 3-5 members participate in building houses in West Virginia.

ADOPT-A-ROAD

UCCSV volunteers adopted a portion of a road in Germantown by picking up trash, recyclables like bottles, cans and aluminum on both sides of the road.  A road signage reads, “adopted by the United Church of Christ of Seneca Valley.”
