PFLAG and LGBTQ+ Ministries

“A Progressive, Inclusive, Open and Affirming, Community of Faith” is more than just a tagline for the United Church of Christ of Seneca Valley.

An Open & Affirming (ONA) Congregation
As an Open and Affirming congregation, the United Church of Christ of Seneca Valley welcomes people of all sexual orientations and all gender identities and expressions. We welcome everyone seeking God’s presence to our service of worship and into the full life and leadership of the church.

LGBTQ+ people are vital members of our congregation attending worship services, serving on and leading church committees and boards, helping to run church ministries and other programs. UCC of Seneca Valley has historically advocated for social justice issues like marriage equality and the end of Don't Ask, Don't Tell. We continue that same justice work today around issues of gender identity education, Trans health initiatives and equality for Transgender people, equal opportunities for LGBTQIA people in employment and housing, and more.

More information about the broader ONA initiative within the United Church of Christ is available from the UCC and the ONA Coalition.

PFLAG
PFLAG is the first and largest organization for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) people, their parents and families, and allies. With nearly 400 chapters and 250,000 members and supporters crossing multiple generations of families in major urban centers, small cities, and rural areas across America, PFLAG is committed to creating a world where diversity is celebrated and all people are respected, valued, and affirmed. Germantown PFLAG is hosted by UCC of Seneca Valley – celebrating family, diversity, and equality. Keeping Families Together. Promoting Understanding. Moving equality forward for all. PFLAG meetings are designed to be safe, confidential, and accepting places for LGBTQ+ people and/or their family and friends to tell their stories and discuss their feelings and concerns, no matter where they are on their journey.

LGBTQIA+ Initiatives Throughout the Year
Throughout the year we strive to honor and celebrate the LGBTQ+ community. Each fall we observe the Transgender Day of Remembrance in prayer or worship. Each Summer we celebrate Pride with a worship series, guest speakers, special events and more. We also host a booth at Frederick Pride and support other DC related area Pride festivities.
